Video: Finding Spike
Meet and greet: Our first day with Spike!
Our first hunt for Spike... we found her! (group hunt)
1. Setting out: Evie and Carter have the radio transmitter, the antenna, and the backpack! Time to find Spike!
3. The find: We found spike in a pile of leaves and dead trees. We marked the pile with pink tape, indicating that we found Spike there. We then filled out our telemetry data sheet detailing the hunt and the find.
Hunt #2 - L.E. and Carter
1. After searching for a while and picking up strong radio readings in this area, we found Spike sitting out in the open. Here's a cute picture of Carter reuniting with Spike. |
2. The struggle: mosquito bites! (The mosquitos were particularly bad today) |
3. Our selfie with Spike! Shortly after our selfie we marked the tree seen in the picture with pink tape, took a compass reading, and filled out our telemetry data sheet. |
Hunt #3- Evie and Hamp
1. We began the walk into the woods with thunder-storm clouds over our heads. We did not know what the weather was to bring, but we had the backpack, radio transmitter, and the antenna, so we were ready to go.
|
2. After 57 minutes of hunting through the rain and humidity, Spike was found! She was buried under some roots of a tree high up on a hill. We took pictures of her, made sure her tracking device was still on firmly, and let her back onto the ground.
|
3. We took one final selfie, then marked the tree with our pink tape, recorded her exact whereabouts using the compass on our phone, and filled out all other details on the telemetry sheet. Our third consecutive successful search! :)

Hunt #4 - L.E. and Carter
1. Hamp and Carter checking the radio reading. They will point the antenna in different directions, and the direction which gives them the highest signal will be the way we go to find Spike. |
2. L.E.'s mosquito bites! |
3. WE FOUND SPIKE! Now we have to mark the tree with our pink tape and fill out our telemetry data sheet!. |
Hunt #5 - L.E. and Carter
1. After picking up strong radio signals near the creek, Carter turned the atenuater and we found where she was specifically. They found Spike in the creek under a rock soaking! |
2. The bottom of Spike's shell was wet and muddy because she was soaking in the creek! |
3. Carter and L.E. had to fix up Spike's transmitter. They cut off the dirty tape and re-taped the tracker on. |
4. Carter and I spotted other wild life! Weird red and black bugs were huddled on a leaf. |
5. After they found Spike, Carter and L.E. tracked and found the extra-credit turtle, I-Turtle. |
6. Carter and I with I-Turtle. We had mark the location where we found I-Turtle with white and red stripped taped. Then we had to fill out a separate telemetry data sheet for her. |
Hunt #6- Evie and Hamp
1. After 23 min of searching, we found Spike underneath a pile of debris! This was our fastest search yet! In order to find Spike, we had to dig through the debris, because she was completely buried from head to toe; no visibility at all. Luckily, Hamp was brave enough to stick his hand through all the debris.
|
2. We took pictures of Spike, made sure all of her gear was in tact, and then measured her exact location with a compass, wrote down all details and observations, and filled out our 6th telemetry data sheet.
|
3. We released Spike back into her bed of debris, and walked back over the creek, down the path, and out of the mosquito-infested woods. Our 6th consecutive successful search! Our group is on a roll.
